Amelia

Amelia spoke toward the microphone in the light fixture again. She said, “I can offer you a job. But first you have to tell me how you talk to animals. The Soviets are keen to know. They will pay you for the information.”

Beth and Patrick had used translation devices during previous adventures in the Imagination Station. Once she had translated foreign languages for Ferdinand Magellan. She had also talked to creatures coming to Noah’s ark. And Patrick had talked to some smart sled dogs during an adventure in Alaska. But the Imagination Station hadn’t given her a translation device on this trip. And she wasn’t going to let Amelia know about them.

She decided not to answer Amelia’s question or communicate with Amelia by writing notes. “What dogs are you talking about?” she asked.

“The space program’s dogs live in the basement,” Amelia whispered. “I have seen you work with animals before. You could help the space program too. That’s why I had the KGB agent bring you here.”

Working with space program dogs seemed exciting. “What would I have to do?” Beth asked.

“Teach the dogs to push buttons when lights flash. They will go into space on test runs.”

Beth crossed her arms. “Will the dogs be safe?”

Amelia put her hand lightly on Beth’s shoulder. “Details, details,” she said. “No sacrifice is too great if it advances science.” Amelia squeezed Beth’s shoulder. “You need to toughen up.”

Beth didn’t want to be tough if that meant being heartless. She brushed Amelia’s hand away. “Maybe I’ll just leave now,” Beth said. She reached into her pocket for the Imagination Station remote control. As she pulled it out, the odd-shaped object came out too.

Amelia suddenly gasped and clapped her hand over her mouth.

Her movements startled Beth. She dropped the object. It hit the floor with a crack.

Beth lunged for it. But Amelia was faster. The scientist snatched up the showerhead-like item.

“My coaxial fuel mixer,” Amelia said.

Coaxial? Beth had never heard that word.

Amelia pointed the fuel mixer at Beth and said, “You had it all along. I thought it got lost in the transport. Lots of things have gone wrong with this program. I think it’s because you followed me.”

Amelia raised the fuel mixer above her head. She did a little dance and waved the object in the air.

“What’s it for?” Beth asked.

“I can improve the rocket fuel mix with this,” Amelia said. “This part will make my rocket go faster and stay in orbit longer. Now the Soviet leaders will see I’ve earned the right to be the first person to orbit the earth!”

So that’s why Amelia is here, Beth thought. Once again, she wants to get glory for herself.
